A semi‐automatic workflow for plot boundary extraction of irregularly sized and spaced field plots from UAV imagery

Abstract Advances in high‐throughput platforms such as UAVs (unoccupied aerial vehicles) facilitate rapid image‐based phenotypic data acquisition. However, existing plot‐level extraction methods are unreliable if field plots differ size and spacing, often occurs early‐generation plant breeding trials. To overcome the limitations of conventional plot techniques, a combinational approach with both field‐map information image classification techniques can be used to optimize extraction. The objective this study was develop boundary workflow for irregularly sized spaced from UAV imagery using spacing vegetation index‐based classifiers. An herbicide screening experiment consisting three replications 780 lentil ( Lens culinaris Medik.) populations foliar sprayed saflufenacil. Aerial acquisition conducted during peak stage RedEdge multispectral camera. A semi‐automatic compiled eCognition software extract boundaries. Normalized difference index (NDVI) calculated locate those low NDVI or no vegetation, pixel resizing based on orientation draw boundary. results showed precise estimation all wide range damage, including complete loss vegetation. By simple convolutional filter (line filter), thresholding, resizing, avoided use complex algorithm‐based methodologies. Results suggest that extended phenotyping studies.
